This summer has been really hot and the humidity has been really high, especially this month. If you’re in warmer climates then chances are that you are going to pass by the prime growing conditions quicker than other climates. It is important to maintain your garden accordingly and we’ve provided some tips on how to keep your garden the best in this hot weather!

  • One good thing about this time of the year is that you should let your plants rest for awhile and that mean you staying out of the hot outdoors. Water and replace mulch as needed and make sure to keep your lawns less than three inches to protect it from the summer heat.
  • If you want to keep your flowers looking fabulous, make sure to keep up on deadheading and removing any dead or undesired flowers. Also, if you’re looking to liven up your area then opt for the more heat-resistant flowers such as hibiscus, melampodium, pentas and zinnias.
  • If you’ve been growing vegetables you should be harvesting daily. Reseed beans and lettuce and start your fall crop if your’re planting on growing peas, brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale and other cole crops.
  • If it is way too hot to plant in your area, then plant a cover crop. You should also plant a cover crop if you have been digging up veggies like potatoes to make the space more appealing.

  • To get more color and beauty from your annuals: Don’t plant them too deeply (one of the biggest causes of poor plant performance); feed them every two weeks with a specially formulated liquid fertilizer; mulch your beds to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool; and finally, provide plenty of water.
  • As temperatures rise and rainfall becomes scarce, remember that your trees, shrubs and other landscape plants need to be watered just as much as your lawn does.
  • Always keep fertilizers and chemicals securely stored out of the reach of children.
  • Watch out for any signs of insect activity. If leaves are discolored or look chewed, insects have most likely set up shop in your landscape and will need to be dealt with as soon as possible.
